WhatsApp Coexistence in Oman: Keep the Business App on Your +968 Number and Add a Team Inbox
Most Omani shops, workshops and service businesses already run on one WhatsApp Business number that every customer has saved. Coexistence lets you keep that number and that phone, and still get broadcasts, automation and a shared inbox. Here is exactly what changes, and what to watch.
Short answer: Coexistence is Meta's official way to connect a number that already runs the WhatsApp Business app (version 2.24.17 or later) to the Cloud API without deleting it from the phone. You keep chatting one-to-one in the app, and your team gets the same conversations in a platform such as QuickWA. Up to 6 months of individual chats and your WhatsApp contacts can be synced once, at connection time. On the app, broadcast lists become read-only, disappearing, view-once and live-location messages are switched off, and linked devices are unlinked (WhatsApp for Windows is not supported afterwards). Messages typed in the app stay free; messages sent through the API are billed at Oman's rates: $0.0341 marketing, $0.0247 utility and service after 1,000 free service messages a month. Open the app on the main phone at least every two weeks, or Meta disconnects the API side.
What Coexistence actually does
When you connect through Meta's signup window and choose your existing WhatsApp Business app account, Meta converts it into an account that both the app and the Cloud API can use. The phone keeps working, and new messages are mirrored both ways: a reply sent from the QuickWA inbox appears in the app, and a reply typed on the phone appears in the inbox.
The number does not change and customers' existing chats simply carry on. For a business whose number is on the shop sign in Ruwi and on a hundred Instagram posts, that is the whole point.

Who Coexistence suits in Oman, and who it does not
| Business | Why Coexistence fits (or doesn't) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Frankincense, perfume and gift shop in Salalah's Al Haffa souq | Owner answers regulars from his phone; wants a Khareef broadcast to opted-in customers and order updates for parcels sent to Muscat | Good fit |
| AC and plumbing maintenance company in Al Amerat with four technicians | The office number is known to every client; a dispatcher needs to assign jobs while the owner still replies on the road | Good fit |
| Spare-parts trader in Sohar Industrial Area | Mechanics send photos of parts all day; the counter staff need a shared inbox, the manager keeps the phone | Good fit |
| Call centre or delivery company sending thousands of updates an hour | A Coexistence number has a fixed throughput of 20 messages per second, and nobody needs the phone | Use an API-only number |
| Business whose team works from WhatsApp for Windows on reception PCs | Windows desktop is not a supported companion after connecting; the team must move to the inbox or another companion | Fit, but plan the change |
| Business that depends on WhatsApp groups with customers | Groups keep working in the app but are not synced to the API | Fit, but groups stay on the phone |
What changes in the WhatsApp Business app
This is the part most businesses get wrong, so here is Meta's own feature list, rewritten in plain words. "In the app" means on your phone after connecting. "Through the API" means what QuickWA or any other platform can see and do.
| Feature | In the app after connecting | Through the API |
|---|---|---|
| One-to-one chats | Keep working; editing and deleting sent messages is supported | Supported; new messages are mirrored both ways and up to 6 months of history can be synced |
| Contacts | No change | Contacts with a WhatsApp number can be synced |
| Group chats | No change | Not supported and not synced |
| Broadcast lists | Switched off: you cannot create new lists, and existing ones become read-only | Not supported; you send broadcasts as approved templates instead |
| Disappearing messages | Turned off for all one-to-one chats | Not supported |
| View-once messages | Disabled for one-to-one chats | Not supported |
| Live location | Disabled for one-to-one chats | Not supported |
| Voice and video calls | No change | Not supported on a Coexistence number |
| Catalog, orders, status | No change | Not supported |
| Greeting and away messages, quick replies, labels | No change | Not supported, so they do not apply to replies sent from the inbox |
| Business profile (name, address, website) | No change | Not supported |
| Channels | No change | Not supported |
Two practical consequences. First, the app's away message does not apply to the inbox, so set up the inbox's own auto-replies and business hours. QuickWA provides inbox equivalents for these app tools, so the habits carry over. Second, if your Eid greetings went out through app broadcast lists of up to a few hundred contacts each, those lists are now frozen. Move the people who agreed to hear from you into segments and send an approved marketing template instead. Our guide to bulk WhatsApp messaging in Oman explains opt-in and messaging limits.
Linked devices
A WhatsApp Business app account can link up to four companion devices. When you connect, all companions are unlinked, and you then re-link the ones you need. Every companion is supported except WhatsApp for Windows and WhatsApp for WearOS. Many Omani showrooms and clinics keep WhatsApp for Windows open on the front-desk PC, so check this before you connect. If a customer writes to you from an unsupported device, Meta says the message does not reach the API, and your team should check the app for it.
Importing your chat history
QuickWA supports Coexistence and imports your WhatsApp Business app history, so your team does not start with an empty inbox. What Meta allows:
- Six months of individual chats. Meta sends messages from the 180 days before you connected, in phases: the first day, then days 1 to 90, then days 90 to 180. Recent conversations arrive first.
- Group messages are never included.
- Media is limited. Meta only sends media references for files from the 14 days before connecting. Older photos and voice notes remain on the phone.
- It happens once. The contact sync and the history sync can each run once per connection, within 24 hours of connecting. Doing it again means disconnecting and starting over.
- You choose. The app asks whether to share history. If you decline, nothing is imported, and new chats still flow from that point on.
Keep the app open on the phone while the import runs; Meta says it can take several minutes. Start it when the shop is quiet, not at 7 PM on a Thursday.
One rule surprises people. A customer who wrote to you before you connected has not opened a customer-service window on the API side. If you want to reply to that person from the inbox, you need a template. Once they write again, a normal window opens. Replies typed in the app are not affected, because app messages sit outside the API's window rules.
Step by step: connecting your +968 number to QuickWA
- Update the app. On the phone that holds the number, update WhatsApp Business to version 2.24.17 or later.
- Check the number and the portfolio. Make sure the number is the one in your app's profile and that you can log in to Facebook as an admin of your Meta business portfolio. If you also plan to verify the business, read our guide to Meta business verification in Oman first so the names match.
- Start from a computer, with the phone beside you. In QuickWA, go to Settings, press Connect and choose the option to connect an existing WhatsApp Business app number. Meta's own window opens.
- Enter your +968 number. Use +968 followed by the eight digits, with no leading zero. Meta shows a code.
- Confirm in the app. The phone receives a message from Meta's official business account. Tap Connect, then Connect to the Business Platform, then confirm whether to share chat history, and enter the code.
- Finish in the browser. Choose your business portfolio and complete the window. The app refreshes and shows that the number is connected to the Business Platform.
- Leave the app open while contacts and history import.
- Set up the inbox. Invite your team (no per-seat fee), set business hours and auto-replies, and set a sending window such as 8 AM to 9 PM Muscat time in Settings.
- Submit your first templates in Arabic and English: an order confirmation, a delivery update and an appointment reminder are the usual three. Our Arabic WhatsApp template library has ready wording.

What Coexistence costs in Oman
There is no Meta fee for Coexistence itself. Meta's documentation is clear on the split: messages your team sends from the WhatsApp Business app remain free, while messages sent through the Cloud API are charged at Cloud API rates. For Omani (+968) recipients that means $0.0341 per marketing message and $0.0247 per utility, authentication or service message, with the first 1,000 service messages per number each month free. App messages also do not open, extend or affect API service windows.
A worked month for the Salalah frankincense shop
The shop answers 2,800 customer chats in a month. The owner replies to 1,600 of them himself from the phone; his two staff answer 1,200 from the QuickWA inbox. Through the API the shop also sends 600 order and shipping updates and one Khareef offer to 1,500 opted-in customers. OMR figures are converted at about 0.3845 rial per dollar and rounded.
| Line | Split: owner on the app, staff on the inbox | Everything through the inbox |
|---|---|---|
| Replies from the app | 1,600 × $0 = $0.00 | None |
| Service replies through the API | 1,200, of which 200 billed × $0.0247 = $4.94 | 2,800, of which 1,800 billed × $0.0247 = $44.46 |
| Utility: order and shipping updates | 600 × $0.0247 = $14.82 | 600 × $0.0247 = $14.82 |
| Marketing: Khareef offer | 1,500 × $0.0341 = $51.15 | 1,500 × $0.0341 = $51.15 |
| Meta's monthly charge | $70.91 ≈ OMR 27.26 | $110.43 ≈ OMR 42.46 |
The $39.52 difference is the value of the free app replies. It is real, but the inbox is where assignment, notes and reports live, so most shops keep the owner on the phone for regulars and the team on the inbox. QuickWA plans start at $5/month and add 0% markup on these Meta fees, because Meta invoices your own WhatsApp Business Account directly. The Oman pricing guide covers Meta's rates in more depth.
Limits and gotchas to know before you connect
The phone must stay active
Meta disconnects the API side automatically if the main phone is inactive for about 14 days, or a companion device for about 30 days. A business owner who leaves the shop phone in a drawer during a long summer break, or travels and switches the phone off, can come back to a disconnected inbox. Open the app on the main phone at least once a week.
Changing phones or reinstalling
If you move the number to a new phone, reinstall WhatsApp Business or re-register, the API connection is switched off. When you finish registering on the new device, the app shows your previously connected platforms with a pre-ticked option to restore them, and reconnection normally completes within minutes. During that time messages cannot be sent or received through the API, and the gap is not back-filled. Do it after closing time.
Disconnecting
The API cannot remove a Coexistence number. To disconnect, open the WhatsApp Business app and go to Settings, Account, Business Platform, then Disconnect Account.
Throughput and messaging limits
A Coexistence number sends at a fixed 20 messages per second: plenty for a shop, tight for a courier sending large bursts. Messaging limits still apply to templates you start: a newly created business portfolio can reach 250 unique customers in a rolling 24 hours, and verification is one of the routes to 2,000.
Odd errors and old providers
A first message from a new customer, especially straight after a Click-to-WhatsApp ad, can briefly show as unsupported; Meta says it usually resolves within seconds. And if your number was connected to another platform that still shares a credit line with you, Meta warns that switching can fail until that is resolved.
Official Business Account status
Meta's Official Business Account page says it does not grant that status to WhatsApp Business app numbers. If it matters to you, consider an API-only number; no provider can promise it either way.
A first-month plan for an Omani team on Coexistence
- Week 1: connect, import history, invite the team, and agree who replies from where. A simple rule works: the owner keeps the phone for regulars, everyone else uses the inbox.
- Week 2: ask existing customers for marketing consent in the chat and record it. Since the September 2026 amendment to Oman's Personal Data Protection Law, explicit consent is required before any marketing; see our Oman marketing rules guide.
- Weeks 3–4: switch on order or appointment updates as utility templates, then send a small National Day offer (holiday 25–26 November 2026) to opted-in customers only.
A sample consent message that works well on a Coexistence number, because it arrives in the chat customers already know:
تبغى نرسل لك عروضنا الجديدة ومواعيد وصول البضاعة على واتساب؟ ردّ بـ «نعم». وتقدر توقفها متى ما تبغى بإرسال STOP.
Would you like us to send you our new offers and stock arrivals on WhatsApp? Reply YES. You can stop them any time by sending STOP.
QuickWA stores the consent on the contact with its source and turns STOP replies into opt-outs automatically. Your consent wording remains your responsibility.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the WhatsApp Business app and the API on the same Omani number? +
Yes. Meta's Coexistence option connects a number that runs the WhatsApp Business app (version 2.24.17 or later) to the Cloud API. You keep replying on the phone, your team uses a platform such as QuickWA, and new messages are mirrored both ways.
How much chat history does Coexistence import? +
Up to 6 months of one-to-one chats, plus your WhatsApp contacts, synced once within 24 hours of connecting. Group chats are never included, and media references are only sent for files from the last 14 days. You can decline history sharing in the app.
What stops working in the WhatsApp Business app after connecting? +
Broadcast lists become read-only, disappearing, view-once and live-location messages are turned off, and linked devices are unlinked; WhatsApp for Windows cannot be re-linked. Groups, calls and quick replies keep working in the app but not through the API.
Are messages sent from the app still free in Oman? +
Yes. Meta says messages sent from the WhatsApp Business app stay free after connecting. Messages sent through the API are billed at Oman's rates: $0.0341 marketing, $0.0247 utility and authentication, and $0.0247 for service messages after the first 1,000 per number each month.
Why did my Coexistence number disconnect? +
The most common reasons are that the main phone was inactive for about 14 days, the number was moved to a new phone or re-registered, or someone pressed Disconnect Account in the app's Business Platform settings. After a device change the app offers to restore the connection during registration.
Does QuickWA support Coexistence for +968 numbers? +
Yes. QuickWA connects through Meta's own signup window, supports Coexistence and imports your chat history. Plans start at $5/month with no setup fee and no per-seat fee, and Meta bills message fees to your own account with 0% markup.
