WhatsApp for Hispanic and Latino Customers in the US: Data, Spanish Templates and What Works in 2026

More than half of Hispanic adults in the US use WhatsApp, more than twice the rate of White adults. Here is what that means for a US business that serves them: the numbers, the rules that changed in 2025, and Spanish message copy that reads like a person wrote it.

Short answer: WhatsApp is the messaging app with the clearest Hispanic lead in the US. In Pew Research Center's 2026 survey, 56% of Hispanic adults use it, against 24% of White adults, and the US has about 70.1 million Hispanic residents (Census, July 2025). The catch: since 1 April 2025 Meta does not deliver marketing templates to WhatsApp users in the United States, so promotions to US numbers are out. What works is service replies, utility updates (orders, appointments, payments), one-time codes and conversations started from Click-to-WhatsApp ads, written in the language the customer chose. Marketing to customers whose numbers are in Mexico, Colombia or elsewhere in Latin America is still allowed. Use one approved template per language (Meta has codes such as es and es_MX, but no es_US), and remember that Spanish opt-out words like BAJA or ALTO are not processed automatically in QuickWA, so an agent has to act on them.

The numbers behind the opportunity

The national average hides the story. Pew's figure for all US adults in 2025 was 32%, up from 23% in 2021; split by ethnicity, the picture changes completely. Each figure below is from the organisation that produced it:

Two lessons sit in that table. First, WhatsApp reach and Spanish fluency are not the same thing: a quarter of Latino adults speak Spanish only a little or not at all, close to two-thirds among third-generation Latinos. Second, the business side is large too: about half a million Hispanic-owned employer firms and over five million one-person businesses.

What the US marketing pause means for this audience

Meta's developer documentation says it plainly: "Starting April 1, 2025, Meta does not deliver marketing messages sent to WhatsApp users in the United States." The send fails with error 131049, on every Business Messaging API including the Cloud API, and Meta has not published an end date. This applies to every US business, whoever the customer is, and it is the single most important fact for planning a Hispanic WhatsApp programme in 2026. Our separate guide on sending marketing messages to US numbers covers the error itself in detail.

Rates are Meta's USD list rates effective 1 October 2026, read from Meta's own rate-card file. Meta prices each message by the country of the recipient's number. Messages your customers send you are free. For US customers, then, the conversation has to start with them or with a transaction they made: a Spanish-language ad that opens WhatsApp, an "Escríbanos por WhatsApp" button, a QR code at the counter.

Meta words the pause as applying to WhatsApp users in the United States; providers report it is enforced by the recipient's phone number. Do not try to reach US residents through foreign numbers they still carry: unwanted promotions get blocked, and blocks hurt your quality rating.

Language: ask, record, then template

Never guess the language from a surname

The Pew data above is the reason. A customer named Hernández may prefer English; a customer named Smith married into a family in Monterrey may prefer Spanish. The cleanest approach is to ask once, early, and store the answer:

¡Hola! Gracias por escribirnos. ¿Prefiere que le atendamos en español o en inglés? / Hi! Thanks for reaching out. Would you like to continue in English or Spanish?

That is a service reply, sent inside the customer's 24-hour window, so it needs no template. In QuickWA, save the answer in a contact custom field (for example language = es) so broadcasts, journeys and agents all use it, and so a customer who answers in English is not sent Spanish later.

Meta's Spanish codes

Templates are approved per language. Meta's list includes Spanish as es plus regional variants: es_AR, es_CL, es_CO, es_CR, es_DO, es_EC, es_HN, es_MX, es_PA, es_PE, es_ES and es_UY. There is no es_US. For a US audience most businesses use plain es, or es_MX when their customers are mostly of Mexican origin, as in Texas, California and much of the Midwest. The code only labels the translation. Keep English and Spanish under one template name so the right one goes to each contact, and submit both together, since each language is reviewed separately.

Tú or usted?

US Spanish-language marketing uses both: usted for health, legal, insurance, tax, finance, home services and money owed; tú for retail, food, beauty and younger audiences. Pick one per brand and keep it everywhere. Avoid machine-literal copy ("Su orden ha sido enviada exitosamente" reads like software; "Su pedido ya va en camino" reads like a person), write dates the Spanish way ("el 5 de noviembre") and times as customers see them ("a las 3:00 p. m.").

Spanish template examples that pass review and sound natural

Neutral US Hispanic vocabulary that customers of Mexican, Central American, Caribbean or South American origin read the same way. Variables appear as {{1}}, {{2}} as in Meta's editor; the category shown is the likely one, and Meta decides.

Order confirmation (utility)

Hola {{1}}, recibimos su pedido #{{2}}. Le avisaremos por aquí cuando salga para entrega. Si tiene alguna pregunta, responda a este mensaje.

Appointment reminder for a home-services company (utility)

The link can be a Stripe payment link, one of QuickWA's integrations. Debt collectors (not original creditors) must add an opt-out notice to every electronic message under Regulation F (12 CFR 1006.6(e)).

One-time code (authentication)

Authentication templates use Meta's preset wording: you choose the language (es), and the customer sees a short Spanish line with the code, plus a copy-code button and expiry note if you add them.

Promotion to a customer in Mexico (marketing; not for +1 numbers)

¡Hola {{1}}! Ya llegó la nueva colección de {{2}}. Te la enviamos a {{3}} en 5 a 7 días hábiles. Escribe STOP si ya no quieres recibir promociones.

Notice the opt-out keyword is the English word STOP. That is deliberate, and it is explained in the next section.

Opt-outs in Spanish are not automatic

QuickWA automatically opts a contact out on these English keywords: STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE, STOPALL, STOP ALL, OPT OUT, OPTOUT and STOP PROMOTIONS. Spanish words such as BAJA, ALTO, CANCELAR or NO MÁS are not recognised automatically today, yet a customer who writes them has clearly asked you to stop. Three habits close the gap:

  1. Tell people to reply STOP in your Spanish copy, as above. US Spanish speakers already see "Responde STOP" on SMS, and the automatic opt-out then works.
  2. Train every agent: if a customer writes BAJA, ALTO or similar, mark the contact opted out at once and confirm ("Listo, ya no le enviaremos promociones").
  3. Review weekly: search the inbox for those words and check each sender is opted out.

Customers in Latin America: where marketing still works

Many of these businesses also sell across the border: online stores shipping to Mexico, Miami firms whose buyers live in Bogotá, travel agencies serving families in El Salvador. The US pause does not touch those numbers; with documented opt-in you can send them marketing templates at their country's rate.

  • Price by destination. Meta's USD marketing rates from 1 October 2026 range from $0.0125 per message to Colombia to $0.0889 to Chile; Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and others fall under Meta's "Rest of Latin America" rate of $0.074. A campaign to 1,000 opted-in customers in Mexico costs about $39.70 in Meta fees.
  • Use their local register. A customer in Buenos Aires uses vos; in Bogotá usted is common even among friends. If a segment is large enough, use the regional code (es_AR, es_CO) and adapt the wording.
  • Local data-protection law also applies. Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Brazil all have their own personal-data laws. Keep opt-in records that show what the customer agreed to and when.

What a bilingual programme costs: one worked example

A bilingual plumbing and HVAC company in San Antonio whose showroom also sells online to customers in northern Mexico sends, in a typical month:

MessagesCategory and marketArithmeticMeta fee
600 appointment reminders and job updates in English or SpanishUtility, US600 × $0.0034$2.04
1,800 agent replies to customers who wrote inService, USfirst 1,000 free; 800 × $0.0034$2.72
300 promotions to opted-in showroom customers in MexicoMarketing, Mexico300 × $0.0397$11.91
Total Meta fees for the month$16.67

Meta invoices that amount to the business directly. The platform fee is separate: QuickWA plans start from $5/month, with no per-seat fees, no setup fee and 0% markup on Meta's message fees. There is no message wallet or credit to top up. Our US pricing guide shows more budgets.

Where it works best

  • Home services (plumbing, HVAC, roofing, cleaning): quotes from customer photos, bilingual reminders, "the technician is on the way" updates.
  • Restaurants, panaderías and caterers: order and pick-up confirmations, catering quotes for quinceañeras and weddings; grow the list through Click-to-WhatsApp ads and in-store QR codes.
  • Tax preparers and insurance agencies: document requests and renewal reminders, especially in the January–April tax season. Usted, always.
  • Clinics and dental offices: reminders with no health details. WhatsApp is not HIPAA-compliant for protected health information; read our HIPAA guide first.
  • Real estate: Spanish-speaking buyers in the US and abroad; see our real estate guide.

Consent and US law

No court has ruled on whether the Telephone Consumer Protection Act covers WhatsApp, and state laws such as Florida's Telephone Solicitation Act (Fla. Stat. §501.059) and Texas SB 140 were written for calls and texts; whether they reach WhatsApp is unsettled. Treat WhatsApp like SMS: clear consent, a record of it, prompt opt-outs, no late-night sends. For a bilingual audience, also record the language the consent was given in. Our US marketing rules guide has the state-by-state detail. This article is general information, not legal advice.

Running it in QuickWA

  • A shared team inbox on one number, with chats assigned to the agent who speaks the customer's language and internal notes the customer never sees.
  • AI agent assist and the knowledge-base bot reply in the customer's language; your agent checks the Spanish draft and sends it.
  • Multilingual templates, a contact field for preferred language, and Click-to-WhatsApp and Meta Lead Ads capture into the same inbox.
  • Shopify, WooCommerce and Stripe payment links for order and payment messages; HubSpot, Zoho CRM, Google Sheets and Zapier for records.
  • A sending window in Settings that holds scheduled broadcasts until it reopens (off by default in the US), and an Android app for agents in the field.

See our United States page for setup, integrations and how QuickWA charges, or the US setup guide for the step-by-step.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of Hispanic Americans use WhatsApp? +

56% of Hispanic adults in the US use WhatsApp, according to Pew Research Center's survey of 30 January to 18 June 2026, published 19 October 2026. That compares with 51% of English-speaking Asian adults, 40% of Black adults and 24% of White adults.

Can I send WhatsApp promotions in Spanish to customers in the US? +

Not as marketing templates. Since 1 April 2025 Meta does not deliver marketing messages to WhatsApp users in the United States, in any language (error 131049). You can still send utility updates, one-time codes, replies inside the 24-hour window and messages in conversations started from Click-to-WhatsApp ads, all in Spanish.

Which Meta language code should I use for US Spanish? +

Meta has no es_US code. Most US businesses use es, or es_MX when their customers are mainly of Mexican origin. Keep the English and Spanish versions under one template name and submit both together, because each language is reviewed separately.

Does QuickWA opt people out when they reply BAJA or ALTO? +

No. QuickWA automatically processes English keywords such as STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE and OPT OUT. Spanish words like BAJA, ALTO or CANCELAR must be handled by an agent, who marks the contact opted out. Telling customers to reply STOP in your Spanish copy makes the automatic opt-out work.

Can a US business market on WhatsApp to customers in Mexico or Colombia? +

Yes. The pause applies to users in the United States. With opt-in you can send marketing templates to customers in Latin America at Meta's rate for their country, for example $0.0397 per message to Mexico and $0.0125 to Colombia from 1 October 2026.

How many Hispanic-owned businesses are there in the US? +

The Census Bureau counts about 496,000 Hispanic-owned employer firms with $730.3 billion in receipts (reference year 2023) and 5.3 million Hispanic-owned nonemployer firms (2023). The SBA Office of Advocacy puts firms with Hispanic majority owners at over 5 million, employing nearly 3 million workers.
