A free virtual number for WhatsApp: decide what you need before you claim one

A dedicated business number is useful when you do not want customer conversations tied to an employee's personal phone. A virtual number can be one option. Before choosing it, decide whether you need a WhatsApp identity, incoming SMS or both. These are separate capabilities.

Also decide who owns the connection internally. Keep the business authorization and account access with the right people. Avoid setting up a long-term support channel under a departing contractor's personal account.

Know what the included number covers

Registration and OTP delivery are not guaranteed

A number appearing in inventory is not proof that another service will accept it. Some services reject virtual numbers or cannot deliver a code to them. WhatsApp registration must meet Meta's requirements; an incoming SMS capability does not replace those checks.

Do not commit that number to printed materials until your intended setup has been completed and you have confirmed the relevant functionality. If registration fails, contact support with the actual error rather than assuming repeated requests will solve it.

Keep the number and workspace decisions separate
