WhatsApp for Restaurants in the UAE: Reservations, Direct Orders and a Ramadan That Runs Itself

UAE diners discover you on Talabat, Deliveroo, Careem, Noon Food or Keeta, then come back on WhatsApp if you give them a reason. That second order, the table booking and the iftar reservation are where WhatsApp earns its keep.

Short answer: UAE restaurants should keep the delivery apps for discovery and use WhatsApp for the customers they already have: reservation confirmations and reminders, direct orders with a payment link and live status, and loyalty offers to people who opted in. Order and booking updates are utility messages at AED 0.0576; offers are marketing at AED 0.2115. A direct order's two status messages cost about AED 0.12. Plan Ramadan 2027 now — it is expected to start around 8 February 2027, subject to moon sighting — and remember Meta does not allow alcohol promotion over WhatsApp to the UAE, so brunch campaigns should sell the food. QuickWA connects to Foodics, starts at $5/month and adds 0% markup on Meta's fees.

The delivery apps are your shop window, not your customer list

The UAE has one of the most crowded food-delivery markets anywhere. Talabat, Deliveroo, Careem and Noon Food have operated here for years, and Keeta — Meituan's international delivery brand — launched in Dubai in September 2025 and, by its own account in partner content published for its first anniversary, reached all seven emirates within 90 days. For a restaurant this is good news for discovery and bad news for margins and data: the apps own the customer relationship, set the commission and decide who sees your listing.

WhatsApp does not replace that. It gives you a channel for the customers who already know you — the office in Business Bay that orders lunch every Thursday, the family in Al Barsha that books the same table for Friday dinner, the regular who would rather message you than open an app. Every repeat order that moves to a direct channel is one you keep in full. The general playbook is in our WhatsApp for restaurants guide; this one is about doing it in the UAE.

Customer messages to you are always free, and a customer who reaches you from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad opens a free entry-point window of up to 7 days in which nothing you send is charged — a good fit for an opening-week campaign.

Reservations that people actually turn up for

For a restaurant that takes bookings — a Jumeirah fine-dining room, a JBR terrace, a shisha lounge on the Corniche — the WhatsApp flow is short. The guest messages or taps a "Book on WhatsApp" link, a WhatsApp Flow or no-code chatbot asks date, time and party size with buttons, and the booking is confirmed with the address, a map pin and parking or valet notes. On the day, a reminder with "Confirm" and "Change" buttons goes out a few hours before. A cancelled table released at 6 pm can still be resold; one that simply does not show up cannot.

Waitlists work the same way: when a table frees up, message the next party with a "Coming / Not tonight" choice and a ten-minute hold. In Arabic, a reminder might read:

مساء الخير {{1}}، نذكّرك بحجز طاولة لـ {{2}} أشخاص اليوم الساعة {{3}} في {{4}}. اضغط «تأكيد» أو «تعديل الحجز».

Direct ordering on WhatsApp

Direct ordering suits cafés with a loyal office crowd, cloud kitchens that already run their own riders, and family restaurants whose regulars order the same thing every week. The pieces:

  1. Menu as a WhatsApp catalog or a link to your own ordering page, with prices in AED.
  2. Order confirmation with the total, the delivery or pickup time, and a payment link (Ziina, Mamo, Telr, PayTabs or Stripe). Cash on delivery works too, but never ask for card details in the chat — Meta's policy forbids requesting full card numbers.
  3. Status updates — "being prepared", "out for delivery" with the rider's name — as utility templates.
  4. A quick "how was it?" the next day, without a discount attached so it stays utility.

At AED 0.0576 per status message, a direct order with a confirmation and a delivery update costs about AED 0.12 in Meta fees. That is the number to compare with what the same order costs you through an app.

Foodics and your WhatsApp

Foodics, the cloud POS and restaurant management system, sells in the UAE — its site lists a UAE number and UAE versions of its POS, payments, online ordering and self-ordering products. QuickWA connects to Foodics, so order events from the POS can trigger WhatsApp messages: order received, order ready, order delivered. That means a branch running Foodics does not need staff to type status updates, and a multi-branch group gets one shared inbox for every outlet's customer messages, with conversations assigned to the right branch.

Loyalty without becoming spam

Restaurants are tempted to broadcast daily. Do not. Meta limits how many marketing messages a person receives from businesses and will withhold yours if they have had too many; people who mute or block you lower your number's quality. What works better in the UAE:

  • Segment by behaviour. Lunch regulars get the weekday set menu; weekend families get the Friday or Saturday offer; lapsed customers (no order in 60 days) get one "we miss you" message, not five.
  • Ask for consent at the moment of delight — after a good meal, a QR card on the table: "Reply YES for our monthly specials." Store it.
  • Respect quiet hours. A promotion at 23:30 earns blocks. QuickWA's sending window in Settings holds scheduled broadcasts until it reopens.
  • Let STOP work in both languages. QuickWA's automatic opt-outs handle it.

A UAE-specific rule: alcohol

Many Dubai and Abu Dhabi venues serve alcohol under licence, and brunch is a fixture of the weekend. Meta's WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy only permits messages promoting alcohol in a listed set of countries, and the United Arab Emirates is not on that list (checked 26 October 2026). Messages may also never be sent to people under 18. So a brunch broadcast to UAE numbers should promote the food, the venue, the music and the time — not drink packages or prices. The same policy bars promoting tobacco products, which matters for shisha lounges. When in doubt, leave it out of the template; Meta can reject it or restrict the account.

Ramadan 2027: plan the season in November

Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin around 8 February 2027 according to astronomical projections reported by The National, with Eid Al Fitr expected around 9 or 10 March, all subject to the UAE moon-sighting committee. For restaurants it is the busiest booking season of the year. A practical plan:

  • Two to three weeks before: build an iftar and suhoor interest list with a Click-to-WhatsApp ad and an in-restaurant QR code.
  • Get templates approved early — an iftar set-menu announcement (marketing), a booking confirmation and a reminder (utility), in Arabic and English. Approval takes time and Ramadan is not when you want to wait.
  • Change the clock. Reminders should land well before maghrib, not at it; suhoor delivery confirmations run late into the night. Adjust QuickWA's sending window for the month.
  • Tone. Keep promotions respectful; a simple "Ramadan Kareem" greeting with your iftar hours does more than discount codes.
  • Eid: family bookings and catering orders spike — send one Eid announcement to opted-in customers, then let the bookings come to you.

Our UAE campaign calendar covers lead times for Ramadan, Eid, DSF and National Day.

A worked month: a Dubai Marina restaurant with a cloud-kitchen brand

The restaurant takes 1,200 reservations a month (confirmation plus reminder each) and its delivery-only brand takes 1,500 direct WhatsApp orders (confirmation plus delivery update each). Staff send 5,000 replies, 1,000 of them free, and the team sends two offers a month to 3,000 opted-in regulars.

MessageVolumeRate (AED)Monthly cost (AED)
Reservation confirmations + reminders (utility)2,4000.0576138.24
Direct order confirmations + delivery updates (utility)3,0000.0576172.80
Staff replies (5,000; first 1,000 free)4,000 billed0.0576230.40
Two offers × 3,000 regulars (marketing)6,0000.21151,269.00
Total paid to Meta1,810.44

Seventy per cent of the bill is the two offers. Halving each send to the 1,500 most active regulars would save AED 634.50 a month; the operational messages that keep tables full and orders moving cost AED 541.44 in total. In Ramadan, expect the reservation lines to grow and plan the marketing budget around one or two well-timed announcements rather than daily pushes.

Setting it up on QuickWA

  • Connect your number through Meta's embedded signup; with Coexistence you can keep the WhatsApp Business app on the same +971 number, while some app features such as broadcast lists and labels move to QuickWA's inbox.
  • Connect Foodics for order-status messages, or use Shopify, WooCommerce, Zapier or webhooks if you order through your own site.
  • Appointment booking handles reservations with confirmations and reminders; a WhatsApp Flow or chatbot asks date, time and party size.
  • Catalog and payment links for direct orders; segments and drip journeys for loyalty; A/B tests to compare offers on a small group first.
  • One shared inbox for every branch, with assignment, no per-seat fees, and an Android app for the floor manager.

Plans start at $5/month, billed in USD; AI, automation, calling and integrations are included from Pro; there is no setup fee; and Meta bills your own WhatsApp Business Account at its published rates with 0% markup from QuickWA. Every plan and its limits are shown after sign-up. More at QuickWA for the UAE.
